I advised the bridge of the ship’s position, recommended courses and times to turn, position of geographic and navigational objects in the vicinity of the ship, and any potential navigational hazards. I recommended alternate tracks, if available, to the navigator and Conn when the primary track is blocked or made hazardous by the presence of shipping or other contacts. I coordinated collision avoidance with the CIC Shipping Officer while maintaining navigational awareness and continuous communication with the Bridge Navigation Team. I served as the Piloting officer during UNITAS South America/Africa deployment (Jan01-Jul01) and also Operation Iraqi Freedom deployment (Jan03-Jun03).Primary Chart Petty Officer- Maintained and Corrected over 25,000 navigational charts for CIC, meticulously prepared all charts for Sea and Anchor details resulting in zero mishaps during the 4 year tour.Other duties included operating the AN/SPA-G Radar Console, the Dead Reckoning Tracer, and maintained communications over secure lines with other ships in battle group. Operated a $30 Million dollar landing craft, Air Cushion (LCAC) vehicle's radar, navigation, and communications equipment in support of amphibious assault and training operations. Provided tactical recommendations to the LCAC Craftmaster based on current amphibious assault tactics, navigation, International and Inland rules of the road, and radio and visual communications procedures.
