The relationship between migration, integration and the labor market is one of the major challenges of the German asylum regime, not only since the “summer of migration” in 2015. This study aims at closing an academic void when it comes to the access to the labor market of people with no fixed residence permit in Germany, that is asylum seekers and people holding a so called “toleration” (Duldung), and their daily survival strategies. Focusing on the people concerned themselves the two leading question are: What strategies to access the labor market do those target groups develop and how do they live their daily live in precariousness? Considering that asylum seekers and “tolerated” persons acquire jobs mainly via their personal networks, the study relies on “Network Approach” complemented by the “Sustainable Livelihoods Approach” when it comes the analysis of everyday survival strategies. Methodically, participant observation has been done since 2016 up to now to understand the phenomenon and identify different (academic) problems. For the project, semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions will be used, both with the target group itself and with the German administration executing work permits for asylum seekers and “tolerated” persons in Germany, namely foreigners’ offices (Ausländerbehörden) and the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit).
