  Vacation trainee

  I have been attached with the Cementing Unit (Middle East and Asia Region) for seven (7) months.My primary task during the internship period is to perform tests on cements that arrive from Middle East and Asia labs. I have been entrusted with tests such as fluid loss test (both stirred and static), compressive strength test, thickening time test and static gel strength test. Apart from that, I am also involved in maintaining the lab equipments and machines so that it is safe to use as well as calibrating it periodically to ensure the accuracy would not be compromised.One of the projects I involved in while undergoing my internship is completing tender project for TOTAL Iraq. For this project, a total of 5 different design of cements need to be formulated according to the requirements set by the customer.Another project that I worked on as part of my internship period is to perform a comparative study between results obtained from Static Gel Strength Analyzer (SGSA) and Static Gel Strength Measurement (SGSM). For this study, 11 cement slurries with varying densities (11.5 pounds per gallon (ppg) - 18.0 ppg) are used. Both these machines determine the strength of static gel formed downhole using different measurement methods. SGSA uses acoustic measurement, whereas SGSM uses mechanical (destructive) measurement.Apart from the engineering lessons learnt, I acquired few other valuable lessons such as the importance of teamwork and time management.   I have been involved in various aspects of two-way radio development. As a design engineer, my role is to ensure parts designed still operate as per intended during any extreme conditions. This is vital since communication plays a major role during any major catastrophe. My job scope as design engineer includes but not limited to :- Designing rubber and plastic parts for sealing and housing purposes, respectively.- Handling Bill of Material, service manuals, prototype builds and environmental certification of radios.- Root causing issues during product development stages.- Mobilizing team to qualify all parts and kits before the product release date.- Working with suppliers to develop parts as per print while ensuring quality and process capability indices are met.- Performing statistical analysis for parts developed to verify process capability will be intact in the long run.- Preparing 2D print for the parts designed which will then be shared with suppliers for manufacturing purposes.I consider the following as my achievements in this role :- Worked on APX8000HXE, Motorola’s 2018 flagship radio which brought in $5.5m revenue for 2018 4th quarter.- Executed benchmarking study for a Motorola product against competitor’s which involves test planning, test execution and data compilation.- Provided technical support for US Motorola team for Fusion 1 (body worn camera) seed stock build.
