Using Foucault's theories of power/knowledge, I considered how power is manifested through scientific knowledge and the glorification of modern technology. Using discourse analysis, I explored the values and vision revealed in their mission statement, particularly their statement that they wish to make humans "better than well." I drew on disability studies and feminist science studies to unpack their assumptions about humanity and wellness, and exposed how their ideals of youth, physical perfection, and intellectual ability draw on rhetorics of productivity and progress that perpetuate social marginalization and exclusion. In a world where technology is imagined as the solution to nearly every problem both social and physical, and technologists are perceived to be thought-leaders, this paper looked at the underlying assumptions imbedded in those discourses.
