  Part of a research group within the department. For P.aeruginosa to initiate its bacterial infection, it must adhere to host tissues. This adhesion is mediated by glycoconjugates, especially LecB (PA-IIL), which has become an attractive target for therapeutics since its high affinity for L-fucose. The goal of this research was to explore and develop a new synthetic route for glycomimetics (bivalent glycoconjugate containing L-fucose) with high affinity for PA-IIL as anti-adhesive drug.

  Part of a research group within the department. My project involved a study on the description of the f-shell of lanthanide- and actinide containing complexes. Due to the f-shell being highly affected by electron correlation- and relativistic effects, calculations on these elements become computationally very demanding. Additionally, the open-shell nature of lanthanide- and actinide complexes make them difficult to describe at the Hartree-Fock level as well as at the electron correlation level, making calculations even more challenging. To circumvent these difficulties and high computational costs the open f-shell brings with it, the f-shell was in this study treated as core – due to f-shells having core-like character – and evaluated on chemical accuracy. This was done using two methods. In the first method the f-electrons where treated as core and the core was replaced by a pseudopotential, describing only the valence electrons in the calculations at the Hartree-Fock level and the electron correlation level CCSD(T). In the second method, a relativistic average-of-configuration Hartree-Fock all electron calculation was performed at the Hartree-Fock level. At the electron correlation level, the f-electrons were transformed into the core and only the valence electrons were correlated. Test calculations of these two methods were performed on lathanide mono- and tri-fluorides and actinide mono-fluorides to assess the accuracy in describing molecular properties and compared with available experimental data.
