      Over the course of five weeks, I took on the role of a maternal and child nurse in the hospitals and clinics of Tanzania. I worked alongside the nurses (or sisters as they're called) in these clinics as well as their nursing students. Every nurse is also trained as a midwife in Tanzania so I was able to practice midwifery skills as well, and was fortunate enough to perform full deliveries on my own. It was an eye opening experience to see the differences between our medical practices and cultures, but I learned a lot and was able to practice my labor and delivery nursing skills in a capacity that traditional nursing students in the US do not get the opportunity to do. Aside from practicing my direct patient care skills, I worked a lot with educating children about public health at schools, shelters, and in the hospitals of both Tanzania and Kenya. Mostrar menos
