The initiative aimed to get local Black and Minority Ethnic Community groups across England to conduct their own needs assessments in relation to drugs education, prevention, and treatment services. It was on this basis that the University of Lancashire offered individuals/groups participating in the research the opportunity to undergo training and to receive certificate on community research and drugs. Medway Ethnic Racial Equality Council (MREC) was amongst the 47 community groups that were recruited in 2004 - 2005 to conduct the needs assessment on drugs and I was approached to work on this project as a result of my research background. The focus of Diversity House work is in representing the interests of minority ethnic groups living in the Swale area, by helping them gain access to adequate health and social care services, education and other services which otherwise would pass them by. In doing this work, Diversity House believes in the inclusion rather than exclusion of all the residents of Swale regardless of their colour, in order to achieve a high level of social integration and equality for all.
