      Lecturer workshop "gender sensitive design"

I am happy to share, that on the 4th and 5th of may, I had the chance to do my explorative session called „gender sensitive design“ with first-semester students from HfG Schwäbisch Gmünd. Together we focused on „gender“ and the variety of topics that can occur with this term. By taking a closer look at surroundings, contexts, and behavioural patterns we identified blindspots and problems. There many stories can be found, heard, and analyzed. By sharing these experiences we collected different perspectives, biases, and problems that were used to explore solutions and reflect on „how we want to design“ Show less

      Lecturer workshop "designing discomfort"

Discriminating norms are all around us, whether we look at white normativity of spaces, heteronormative imagery, gendered typography, or doors that only abled bodies can open. How as designers, students, educators can we address these issues? How can we unlearn the norms and rules of the only one “good” design, deeply rooted in our education? In the workshop Designing Discomfort, Monja Simon, I and our students, critically explored how specific norms and ideas about gender, race, class, ability, and sexuality influence our design practices. In Groups the students inquired the question of how to make the “invisible, visible” - Creating, Designing and allowing discomfort. How to raise (and design) awareness on various topics touching upon accessibility, design and privilege. Show less

      Lecturer workshop

⤳⤳⤳ About the Workshop“Everything you design has an effect. Everything we put in this world designs us back and influences this environment.” (Julia Lohmann)In design, we often overlook hidden stories and perspectives, focusing instead on what’s normal or neutral. But design is never truly neutral, it can include or exclude people based on race, gender, ability, and other factors. This workshop invited the students to listen closely and uncover the stories that lie - in between - the unspoken experiences: voices, and histories embedded in our close surroundings. We aimed to practice listening as a way to discover the hidden stories that surround us in our physical and virtual enviornments. Together we Imagined what the walls would say if they could hear every experience that’s taken place, and asked ourselves what voices or perspectives might they share with us? By listening, collecting, visualising, and sharing these invisible stories, we started to understand how certain design norms can unintentionally exclude or marginalise people.Supporting the discourse we shared projects that used listening either as a starting point, methodology, or mode of operation - we analysed and shared related tools, references and possibilities of making the students research public.⤳⤳⤳ Key QuestionsShaped by theories of Sara Ahmed (Feminist Ear), Pauline Oliveros (Deep Listening) and Julia Lohman (What designs us?) the following questions shaped the trajectory of our weeks inquiry:If the walls or objects around us could share the stories they’ve heard, what might they tell us?What kinds of experiences might people have in this space that we don’t immediately notice? What unspoken rules or invisible boundaries are present in the design of this space?
