      It is widely accepted that biodiversity has to be conserved (e.g. Global Sustainable Development Goal No. 15) but surprisingly little is known about the processes which are driven by biodiversity, the kinetics of these processes, their scale-dependency, systemic feedback loops as well as potential or already crossed tipping points. The reason for this is simple: biodiversity means complexity, thus many degrees of freedom to be covered for addressing its working principles.
