      Aug 1998 - Aug 2002

Once 18 years old I was successful in my application to become a machine operator/setter on our brand new Martin 616 folder gluer. I received extensive training from Martin themselves in gluing printing and setting of the machine. I was part of a 3 man crew rotating roles to learn every aspect of the machine and process. I joined LINPAC in 1998 at the age of 17 working as the transport manager admin. in this role I learned the process of conversion into loading bay then the route to delivery. in this role I also spent time in the sales department who were closely lined to transport giving me a good understanding of all 3 areas of the business.

      Martin 718 machine operator

In 2003 I was transferred to our Martin 718a as this was a more demanding high profile folder gluer with an opening for a new operator. on this machine my role was similar but much more high pressured due to the machine being one of our high output fast setting machines. I strived on the high demand high pressure environment and enjoyed the new challenge.

      Martin 718 technical operator

I was then successful in my application to become a Martin 718 technical operator becoming responsible for setting running and the output/performance of the machine including the box setter who now worked under me. I found this role very different and more rewarding as I was now in charge and now answered directly to the shift manager in terms of quality and performance including managing the machines box setter.

      Martin 616 technical operator

I was then successful in my application to become the technical operator on the martin 616 folder gluer which was the original machine I started on as a box setter. I saw this as an important chapter in my career to become in charge of the machine I first carried out my training giving me full experience of all the rolls within our gluing department making me the most multi skilled and versatile operator in the plant.

In may 2015 I was successful in my application to become a "Front line manager" (shift manager) I am responsible for "D shift" which includes 7 conversion machines and 19 staff mixed of folder gluers and rotary die cutters. I am responsible for the entire shifts H&S, quality, performance and also time keeping including hours worked through our wages system clockwise. I run the shift on a 24/7 shift pattern which means on nights I am in charge of the whole plant as no senior management is on site. DS Smith has a terminology of refereeing to the FLM as a "mini MD" as on nights and weekends we are the most senior person on site out of hours.I am loving the role and thrive on decision making and the responsibility the role entales. Show less I was then transferred to our new rotary die cut machine the Gopfert evolution HBL to become part of a 3 man team running the state of the art rotary die cutter. this was a fantastic opportunity to learn a new area of the business as I had never worked in rotary die cutting until now. I found the role high demand but very rewarding and enjoyed learning new skills including high quality printing and understanding all aspects of die cutting from different types of form rubbers to different blades and creasing profiles. while on this machine I attended various printing and anilox courses and also received 2 EFIA printing awards.
