      Medic

The Berkeley Free Clinic is a free clinic in the East Bay that aims to provide quality, holistic medical and healthcare services to underserved populations in the United States. I provide STI testing, treatment, and counseling and run appointments for people with dermatological concerns, minor wounds and burns, upper respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, ear concerns, and TB testing. I also provide counseling and education on pregnancy, STIs, and a variety of other medical concerns. In addition to providing free medical care, I contribute the collective clinic by managing our team of on-call licensed medical professionals and tracking attendance and contract commitment for clinic members. I also collaborate with other medics to train and teach new trainees through observation, skills practice, and classes. When necessary, I consult and develop treatment plans with licensed medical professionals. For a one year period, I am the coordinator of the medical section and handle administrative tasks, such as managing biweekly business meetings, communicating with other sections of the clinic, responding to voicemails and emails from clients and associates, and ensuring the staffing and smooth running of medical section shifts each week. I am also working with licensed medical professionals to update all of our treatment protocols to ensure we are in accordance with the highest standard of medicine. Show less

      Jul 2017 - May 2020
      Undergraduate researcher

I’ve worked as an undergrad researcher under Dr. Brett Staahl and Dr. Jennifer Sabo on a project to develop a therapy using CRISPR/Cas9 technology that could permanently alter the genome to mitigate the most damaging effects of Huntington’s Disease. I have played various roles in the lab. I run behavioral tests on multiple cohorts of mice of two different mouse models. I also have experience with DNA extraction from tissue samples, genotyping, running PCRs, and gel electrophoresis. I’m also responsible brain sectioning using a microtome and help with mounting and staining the sections on slides. I am trained on the confocal fluorescent microscope and do imaging of the brain cross-sections to visualize huntingtin aggregates. I’m currently working on an honors thesis this year related to the Huntington’s project and with a focus on using Next Generation Sequencing to analyze efficiency and accuracy of genetic editing. I’m currently optimizing a PCR protocol to prepare the samples for sequencing, and then will analyze the data. Show less

      Mentor

I advise freshmen and sophomores interested in the Molecular and Cell Biology major at UC Berkeley in academic and extracurricular opportunities. I am typically assigned 2-3 lower division students and meet with each of them about once a month to discuss career plans and goals for the semester. When applicable, I advise about research opportunities, available classes, and jobs.

      Aug 2017 - May 2020
      Course facilitator

I work with three other undergraduate students to facilitate the most popular student-taught class on UC Berkeley campus. We prepare and facilitate a weekly student-led class about baking skills, including giving lectures and lead class discussions. We help students develop baking skills during a semester-long class. I also grade, log, and organize assignments and grades for students during weekly board meetings and coordinate logistics with faculty sponsor and student facilitators.

I studied a novel biological phenomenon that occurs in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) during times of stress. I was particularly interested in determining if this novel phenomenon contributes to the pathology of asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, and diabetes, and if so, by what mechanism.
