Through FWC State Permitted research for the collection and biological sampling of yellow stingrays (Urobatis jamaicensis) I was able to determine the age and growth parameters for a data limited species within South Florida. We found that yellow stingrays are a fast-growing, short-lived elasmobranch, only living up to 6 years old with a relatively young age at maturity.

I was responsible for the data analysis of short duration PSAT tagging data from pelagic stingrays (Pteroplatytrygon violcaea) to determine short-term vertical movements and diel migrations. Through the data analysis, we can contribute vital information to reduce incidental bycatch within fisheries with modification of gear deployment to mitigate bycatch within the targeted species’ foraging areas. Research efforts were focused on the creation of a bycatch reduction device to use in pelagic longline gear with efforts in reducing the amount of wildlife bycatch. Through this research I gained experience in biological sampling of Caribbean shark species, as well as field experience in harsh conditions.

I was selected from a national pool of female scientists to participate in the population census of white sharks at Guadalupe Island, Mexico using photo identification. During this expedition, I had the opportunity to present my thesis research to fellow scientists, as well as gain insight into the importance of population studies.
