  My efforts focused on the study of the molecular mechanisms of regulated cell death in filamentous fungi. I have developed and/or optimized diverse methodologies; in particular, I have established assays to measure the intracellular concentration of calcium. Mentored by Arnaldo Videira.Ph. D. project “The molecular basis of programmed cell death in Neurospora crassa”, at the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology, University of Porto, Portugal, under the supervision of Arnaldo Videira.Funded by a research fellowship from Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (4 years; ref.: 104210) and a research fellowship from COMPETE - Programa Operacional Factores de Competitividade (5 months; PEst-LA051301-BTI).2012: Five-month stay at the Glass Lab of the University of California, Berkeley, USA, under the supervision of Louise Glass (funded by an individual EMBO Short-term fellowship [ref.: 329-2012]).2011: One-month stay at the Fungal Cell Biology Group of the University of Edinburgh, UK, under the supervision of Nick Read.2009: One-year stay at the Cancer Biology Group of the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto, Portugal, under the supervision of Valdemar Máximo and Paula Soares. I have greatly expanded my experience in sequence analysis, identification of targets for genetic manipulation, generation of mutant strains and confocal microscopy. Mentored by Louise Glass.

Our projects aimed to develop a molecular biology toolkit to substantially expand the knowledge on the fundamental mechanisms regulating the trap morphogenesis program and the potential application of nematode-trapping fungi as a tool for pest control in agricultural settings.
